Douglas Johnson E-RYT 500, YACEP

With over 900 hours of Yoga Alliance certified training under his belt, and well over 8,000 hours of actual teaching experience, Douglas Johnson – E-RYT 500, YACEP and founder of Mahāpatha Yoga – is one of Atlanta’s most experienced, knowledgeable, and well-trained teachers of yoga. Since 2009 he has taught countless classes and many retreats, trainings and workshops.

Douglas has had the privilege of studying with some of the best yoga instructors that modern yoga has to offer like Amrit Desai, Paul Grilley and Andrey Lappa, and holds certifications in the schools that each of these yogis founded – Kripalu Yoga, Yin Yoga, and Universal Yoga respectively.

Douglas’ conception of yoga, however, extends well beyond the physical alone. A long-time practitioner of Zen, Douglas has also been teaching meditation since 2000 and offers instruction in both Zen meditation and Chakra meditation as taught by scientist, yogi, and Shinto Priest Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama. He has also studied both eastern and western philosophy at the university level and has a keen interest in modern science and medicine.

A semi-professional musician, Douglas has also studied and practiced Kirtan and Bhakti yoga with two of today’s best known Kirtan wallahs, Jai Uttal and David “Durga Das” Newman, and offers Kirtan as a regular part of his teaching.

Perhaps what truly sets Douglas’ teaching apart, however, is how he brings all of this knowledge and experience together into a clear and unified whole that he calls Mahāpatha Yoga (great-path yoga). Mahāpatha Yoga is a blend of old and new, east and west, art and reason, science and spirit, Shiva and Shakti, Yin and Yang, and Form and Emptiness.

Douglas currently offers instruction in: Vinyasa yoga; Yin yoga; pranayama; bandha; mudra; yoga nidra; chakra meditation; and Zen meditation. In addition to currently teaching 15 classes a week he gives private
