Geshe Ngawang Phende became a monk at the age of twelve and lived for two years at Woechen Thukje Choeling Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal. He then joined Drepung Loseling Monastery in Karnataka, India in 1982 where he completed his monastic education and passed the Geshe Lharampa examination in 2001, which is the most prestigious and highest degree one can earn in a monastic university. After his Tantric studies at Guymey Monastery in 2002, Geshe Phende was the resident teacher at Lam Rim Buddhist Center in Johannesburg, South Africa for over three years. He is currently one of the resident teachers at Drepung Loseling Monastery in Georgia, USA.
